Purina Celebrating 125 Years

Sep 27, 2019

With roots dating back to 1894, Purina is celebrating a landmark anniversary — 125 years. The year 2019 marks an historic landmark in Purina’s history.

William H. Danforth founded the company that would become known as Ralston Purina in St. Louis. Based on the company slogan, “Where Purity is Paramount,” Purina was incorporated into the company’s name in 1902, the same year it adopted the iconic Checkerboard logo.

Purina opened the first ever pet nutrition and care center in 1926 at Gray Summit,  Mo., west of St. Louis. In 1957 Purina introduced extrusion, a manufacturing process for dry pet food that produces a flavorful, expanded particle, or “kibble”.

Purina’s global team of 500 plus scientists, including nutritionists, behaviorists, veterinarians and other specialists, work to improve the future of pet care.

“At Purina, we’re intent on celebrating the hardworking dogs and people who share a passion for the outdoors,” said Purina Director of Sporting Dog Programs Karl Gunzer, whose team  sponsors and attends 300 plus sporting dog events annually. The field trial community is familiar with pointing dog contingent: Greg Blair, director; Terry Petro, Jim Smith, and Terry Trzcinski, consultants, and Dean Reinke, who is set to soon retire.
