Region 3 Amateur All-Age Championship

Hoffman, N. C. — The Region 3 Amateur All-Age Championship took place at the Sandhills Wildlife Area in Hoffman, N. C., on December 15.

A banner entry of 38 dogs competed for three days of running.

The judges named Home Big Boy as champion. Big Boy was handled by Johnny Atkinson of Marion, S. C. Home Big Boy is a six-year-old white and orange pointer male owned in the partnership of Atkinson, Ray Joye, Grayson Francis and Dwight Smith. Grayson Francis scouted Big Boy.

Named runner-up was Mohawk Mill Glory, two-year-old white, black, tan and ticked setter female owned and handled by Gary Winall of Powahtan, Va. Glory was scouted by Ellen Clements.

On Friday evening, Region 3 held its annual meeting to review our business agenda. On Saturday evening, Region 3 hosted a handlers’ cocktail hour and dinner.

Thanks to John and Gretchen Adsit, Gary Winall, Ellen Clements and Nida Giddens for their assistance with the food service for Saturday night’s dinner.

Judges for this trial were Mike Hester, pro handler from Mebane, N. C., and pro handler Pat Casey from South Hill, Va. They remained attentive throughout the three days and did a good job of keeping the trial on schedule.

Convenient dog wagon service was provided by the always dependable Larry McDonald.

The Winners and Others

Home Big Boy ran on Friday afternoon on course No. 5. Turning loose at the concrete columns Big Boy was found on point at 8 just past the second sand road on left woodsedge.

After crossing the main road he was shown going down the right edge of mile long field. At 25 point was called with Big Boy standing at right edge food plot beside plum thicket. This was his second find of a two find effort. Big Boy continued on with a strong forward race and finished going up the hill to the main road crossing.

Mohawk Mill Glory ran in first brace Saturday morning on course No. 1. Breaking away at clubhouse, Glory showed at bottom of hill and was sent to the front. At 10 point was called with Glory standing beside plum thicket on top of hill. Gary flushed a nice covey with all in order.

The remainder of her hour Glory held the front with some nice forward casts, finishing up the hill at the beginning of course No. 2.

Others that were mentioned by the judges were Marques Armed Robber, Miss Lightfoot, Z Z Top, Mohawk Mill Image, Reloaded and Mohawk Mill Pirate’s Legacy.

The weather was good and birds were plentiful. It was a good contest and we look forward to next year’s renewal.
