Dresden, Ohio — Well, it took two tries but a successful Region 4 Championship trial was held.

Weather forced a postponement of the mid-March date so the trial was rescheduled for March 30 at Tri Valley WMA near Dresden, Ohio. Weather was still challenging but tolerable for the trial. Strong east winds were present the first day of the trial and all but shut down the bird-finding for that day.

Raag’s Miss Lightfoot, nine-year-old white and orange pointer female, was declared the Region 4 Amateur Champion. She was already an open champion along with several runner-up championship titles to her credit.

Last December she was invited to compete in the AFTCA National Amateur Invitational Championship and was called back for the finals of that event. The pointer female is the pride and joy of her owner, trainer and handler Ray Wheeler of Shelby, Ohio. “Liz’s” race was always forward and reaching. Her four finds were handled with style and manners expected of a worthy champion.

Hollywood Madam, four-year-old white and black pointer female owned and handled by Regis Linn  of Indianola, Pa., was named runner-up and she earned her title with her performance. She had four finds all handled with proper manners. Her race was consistent and forward.

Two dogs closest to the winners were Backcountry Bonnie and Backcountry Polly, owned and handled by Chris Catanzarite of Scenery Hill, Pa. Both these dogs found birds and handled them well.

Judges for this event were Jim Wallace of Marion, Ohio and Bill Branham of Carleton, Mich. Both gentlemen have been around bird dog events and have hunted with dogs extensively for many years. Their decisions were well received.

Region 4 President Mike Jackson was to handle his entries in the trial but a back injury prevented him from riding. He was on hand to handle administrative duties.

Roger Watson, Region 4 secretary, took entries and conducted the drawing.

Randy Hopkins handled most of the bird planting chores for the trial. Assistants were Jim Cipponeri and Jeff Haggis. Tim McClurg procured and delivered the birds.

Purina Pro Plan was a much appreciated sponsor of the trial. What Purina does for field trials is as appreciated by the region as it is helpful. Thanks to Greg Blair and Nestlé Purina.
