Roby, Tex. — The 2021 Region 7 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship was held the weekend of March 21-23, exactly a month later than originally planned.

Everything was in place for a February trial and then Texas experienced one of the worst winter storms in memory. It appeared that we wouldn’t have a Championship this year. But, thanks to the hard work of a dedicated group of club members, the trial was rescheduled.

Many thanks also to the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch, in Roby, Tex., for allowing us the use of this excellent venue once again.

Judges for this year’s event were Eddy Smith of Fruitvale, Tex., and Mike Sandifer, of Lexington, Tex., who judged the Championship. Shawn Rowan of Cypress, Tex., joined Eddy in judging the companion Derby. We extend our sincere appreciation to these fine men who spent their time in the saddle, paying close attention to the dogs, while avoiding the large patches of cactus that make west Texas quail country what it is.

Due to the severe winter weather, and dry conditions that followed, birds were scarce this year. Eighteen dogs ran in this year’s Championship. The dogs hunted hard but few were rewarded for their efforts.

Our 2021 champion came out of the fourth brace on the first day’s running of the trial. Rowan’s Pena Creek Ike, three-year-old white and liver pointer male, owned and handled by Shawn Rowan of Cypress, Tex., proved he had what it takes to find the elusive quail.

Chupacabra, five-year-old white and orange pointer male, owned and handled by Tyson Traw of Wichita Falls, Tex., took runner-up honors.

Twelve dogs ran in the Shooting Dog Derby. First was Reed’s Super Spirit (pointer female), owned and handled by Jason Super; second went to Erin’s Lukenback Texas (pointer male), owned and handled by Mike Sandifer; and third was Reed’s Yellowstone (pointer male), owned and handled by Jason Reed.

Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this Championship happen. It was truly a team effort. And thanks to all the participants who came and made it a success. We hope to see you again next year.
