Millville, Pa. — The Ridgerunners Bird Dog Club held its inaugural trial on State Gamelands #226 near Millville, Pa. It was a typical early spring day with morning temperatures in the 20s then reaching into the upper 40s by the afternoon.

State Gamelands #226 is approximately 40 minutes southeast of Williamsport and 20 minutes north of Bloomsburg. This 4,300-acre tract of state gamelands has been a popular destination for local pheasant hunters for many years.

The Game Commission does a very nice job of managing the birdfields here and they are spread out enough that hunters can give each other plenty of space.

Twenty-four amateur handlers from eight different states entered 44 dogs to compete. It was an overwhelming show of support for a new club running on new grounds. Hopefully we will see you all again next year.

A special thanks goes out to Jennifer Bogar for helping with food preparation and pre-trial logistics. Mike Spotts also deserves a big thank you for helping with just about everything!

Dean Avillion, Mike Oxenrider and Dennis Kivikko probably needed a couple extra Advil after this trial due to planting birds for 15 braces, all by foot. You all were a major part of the trial running as smoothly as it did.

Purina should also be recognized for their continued support of the field trial community and they also provided dog food coupons to the winners.

The Winners

A separate puppy course had to be utilized due to a larger than expected entry. The course did not have the ideal breakaway, but after five minutes the puppies had ample opportunity to prove their potential by navigating several sections of pheasant fields and hedgerows. Thank you Greg Fried and Jeremy Estep for judging and climbing that hill seven times. John Capocci handled his pointer male Grouse Hill Duke to a blue ribbon performance. Duke hunted hard from start to finish while handling well. Knob Mountain Nomad (Ray), handled by Mike Spotts, laid out a big race to take home second. It should also be noted that Ray had a woodcock find during his brace. Rounding out the placements was Joe Levesque’s hard charging pointer male Island Pond Finnback. The judges were very excited about this field of puppies and stated that almost all of them showed potential to be future shooting dogs.

Justin Evans and Rob Boos looked over a field of talented Derbies. Dean Avillion handled his pointer female Huckleberry’s Lucky Penny to the blue. Penny is a beautiful young pointer that exhibited a superb ground race, two quail finds and a woodcock find. Second was Grouse Hill Prima, pointer female owned and handled by John Capocci. Prima hunted hard and had two quail finds. The yellow was awarded to Bradley Roth’s setter male Baker River’s Oakley on the merits of two quail finds and a fancy ground race.

Three woodcock were pointed during the Derby and the judges reported seeing 10-12 woodcock on the course.

The Shooting Dog Stake was under the watchful eyes of Pedrag Kazic and Mike Mercanti. Both  judges are experienced bird dog men and we are grateful for their efforts.

Bringing home the blue ribbon was Grouse Ridge Gambler (Fess), setter male owned and handled by Mike Spotts. Fess exhibited a strong ground race that was highlighted by three rock solid quail finds. Flash, pointer male owned and handled by Steve Chiafalo, ran hard, handled with ease and had two quail finds. Steve is a young trialer and one of the best parts of the day was seeing the exactment on his face when his placement was announced. Rounding out the placements was consistent winner Pirate’s Mean Louise, pointer female owned and handled by Dennis Kivikko. Louise had a fancy race, four quail finds and an unproductive.

We are looking forward to next spring and will continue to work toward providing a quality trial for all.
