Berea, Ky. — The inaugural running of the Rolling Fork Bird Dog Club was held on October 19-20 at Berea, Ky.

The grounds were in good shape, considering that it was still early in the season, groomed by Bill Brown who did a really nice job mowing fields and planting food plots. Thank you, Bill.

To separate different types of work, the walking stakes were run on Saturday, single course, and horseback stakes continuous course on Sunday.

The entries were not abundant, some due to handlers going hunting or participating in other trials. Thanks everybody for coming, giving their dogs a chance to show themselves.

Furthermore, thanks to the judges — Mike Branscum, Joe Hopkins, Magda Lear, Ronnie Rogers and Art Terstage — for their time in the saddle evaluating the participating dogs.

Not last, thanks to my son Dylan for planting birds and helping in the kitchen and also to Charlie Turner for driving a dog wagon.

Saturday’s weather was very nice, sunny and calm, almost feeling cold in low 70s after a long summer with a record stretch of 90s that lasted until the beginning of October.

Winner of the Open Shooting Dog (walking) was setter male Vitali Grouseringer Zippo (Gary Vitali) with one back and one solid find in the last minute. Though a number of high quality shooting dogs were entered, the lack of training possibilities in the long hot summer negatively affected dogs’ work and no other dog was placed.

Under the sunny sky, the temperature had risen for the Open Derby; some of the nice entrants did not put all of themselves into their run. The winner was setter male Vitali’s Grousering Justify (Gary Vitali). Earning second was setter male Seven of Diamonds (Joe Hopkins), and third was setter female Shepherd’s Faith (Ronnie Rogers).

Three Open Puppy entrants had some fun with birds in the heat of the day. The winner was setter male Vitali Grouse-ringer Pappy (Gary Vitali), very promising talent that will certainly be seen in the winners’ circle in the future.

The weather changed for Sunday’s running. Though the forecast said 0% chance of rain, it was overcast with drizzle and light rain at times, mid-60s.

The horseback stakes were run on a continuous course. There were some really nice entrants but heavy cover at places and trees and bushes still in full foliage hindered big running dogs from handlers’ views and therefore a retrieval unit was needed on a few occasions.

The Open All-Age winner was pointer male Outlaw Rocky River (Bill Hoover) with one nice find of a covey in a food plot. Second was Irish setter female Roses Are Red (Tim Hammons) based on her race.

The winner of Open Shooting Dog was Irish setter female Roses Are Red (Tim Hammons) with a treeline covey find and excellent race. Second was pointer female Lonesome Shadow (Ed Stevens) for a consistent race and one find.

Congratulations to all of the winners. Thanks to everyone for coming and supporting the field trial sport.
