Falls, Pa. — On September 26 the Sandy Valley Bird Dog Club held its trial for the first time at DeCoverly Kennels.

Nestled in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, DeCoverly Kennels is known for its breeding of fine English Setters. I would like to start off by thanking Brigid Bodine kennel manager for DeCoverly. She runs a first class establishment.

Next I would like to thank club member and personal friend Nick Puhak for helping me get this trial off the ground. Nick is a professional trainer at DeCoverly.

Throughout the day we received numerous compliments on the spectacular DeCoverly grounds and the attention to detail that was taken to groom the course to perfection. A special thanks and applause for this goes to Charlie Jindracek, head grounds man at DeCoverly. Helping Charlie with this task were club members and DeCoverly Staff Tom Davis and Mike Marcantie. These two gentlemen judged, planted birds, and always seemed to be one step ahead of everything that needed to be done.  Thank you, Tom and Mike.

Special thank you to Deann Deritis and her family for helping with the wonderful lunch.

We started our day with a fine group of puppies. Taking home the blue ribbon was pointer male Big Run Bullet. “Bull” ran a big forward race with a nice chukar find for his handler Andy Bogar. Second place went to setter male Super Storm Cliff that hit all of the cover and handled well for handler Bob Watts. Taking home the yellow for this reporter was pointer male Huckleberry’s Ring of Fire. “Cash” ran a classy, forward race.

Taking home the blue ribbon in a short stake of Derbies was pointer male Huckleberry’s Ice Storm. “Rip,” handled by this reporter, ran a powerful forward race with three bird finds handled with Derby manners.

Taking home the blue ribbon out of a fine list of shooting dogs was pointer male Zuk’s Rambling Man. “Ben” ran a forward race, hitting all of the covers, having two well-handled bird finds for his handler Marty Zukovich. Second place went to setter male Super Storm (“Fed”).  This fine dog had two finds in his classy race with a strong finish.  Thor Kane who handled Fed also handled setter female No Limit to the yellow ribbon. "Zoey" had four finds with a nice forward race.

Finishing out this action-packed day was our Shooting (gun) Dog Stake. Taking home the blue ribbon for her handler Tom Davis, was German shorthair “Luna”. Luna ran a big race with four finds and one stop to flush. Second place went to setter female, Knob Mountain News. “Sharla” hand six finds and handled well for her handler Jacob Spotts. Third was pointer male Chase, with three finds and in nice race for his handler Mike Powers.

Special thanks goes to our judges: Andy Bogar, Nick Puhak, Jon Ferdinand, Mike Marcantie, Mike Spotts, Tom Davis, Marty Festa and Thor Kane.

Once again we would like to extend a huge thanks to DeCoverly Kennels for a fine day we are looking forward to our trial next year.
