Field Trial Report

Southern Illinois Bird Hunters Club

By Kay Morrison | Nov 20, 2019
Labur's Undisputed First in the Open Shooting Dog Stake

Cutler, Ill. — October 19-20, the first fall trial of the season, was hosted at Pyramid State Park, Captain Unit, by Southern Illinois Bird Hunters.

Club members Don Heisner, Jeremiah Seiber, Doug and Judy Reisner, Jim Lawless and Kay Morrison were all on hand and helped make a successful and enjoyable full two days.

This early trial began and continues to serve as a horseback and walking venue. Saturday was a full day of horseback competitors and a full day Sunday for the walking stakes.

A new dog wagon, provided by the Indiana Field Trial Clubs, was put to good use on Sunday, serving as not only dog boxes but providing seating for spectators to enjoy watching the walking stakes. While my horse was on loan I experienced that ride first hand and enjoyed watching the dogs work as well as the stories that were shared. Everyone there expressed gratitude to the Indiana folks for their donation to our sport and were happy to put it to good use.

The Pyramid grounds are in good shape this year, thanks to Don Heisner, Ed Graves and Jim Lawless, assisting Cha Hill and staff (Mike, Jason and Henry) with the mowing.

Saturday began with the horseback Open Shooting Dog with an entry of twenty. Labur’s Undisputed (Dolly), owned by Larry Burgard and handled by Jeff Wagoner, earned top honors with one find of her own and a divided find. Dolly handled well for Jeff and smoothly carried the front. No stranger to the winners’ circle, Beaucoup Creek Buck, one of Don Heisner’s fine setters, took second with a find at the end of his brace and a nice race as well. Third went to Buckheart’s Fools Gold (Jay), owned and handled by Jeff Wagoner. Jay had one find.

The Open Derby followed with six entries and was won by Mike Duvall with his fancy Stellar’s Natural Disaster (Dani). Second went to Funseeker’s Fancy Pants, owned by Rich Thornton and handled by Jeff Wagoner. Awarded third place was Lawless Deja Vu for Jim Lawless.

Sunday’s walking stakes consisted of an Open Shooting Dog, Open Derby and Amateur Shooting Dog.

The Shooting Dog had twelve entries, most with bird contact. Jeff Hainline’s pointer Hainline’s Silver Star took first with two finds and two backs during her brace. Don Heisner swept the remaining placements with Beaucoup Creek Gus and Beaucoup Creek Buck. Gus had two finds. Buck had two finds and a nice back.

Six Derbies competed. Again, Mike Duvall and Dani worked together to win the stake. Brad Hargis and his setter Harg’s Hire Hope and Butch Spelbring and his pointer Wolf Creek Browneye Suzy were second and third.

The final stake was the Amateur Gun Dog. Frank Christie’s Juice covered the country and had four finds during his thirty minutes. Beaucoup Creek Penny was a close second with three contacts herself. Newcomer Grant Green earned third place with his pointer Jazz.

Thank you very much to our judges for the weekend, Aaron McAfee, Mark Meier, Brad Hargis, Jim Lawless and Kay Morrison.

It would be impossible to run as many braces as we did in two short days without the help of our dedicated friends that assisted with dog wagon and everything else that came along.

Special thanks to Don Heisner, Doug and Judy Reisner and Jeremiah Seiber. Also, please know that we are appreciative of everyone who participated and supported us.
