Hoffman, N. C. — This was the Southern Pines Pointing Dog Club’s second field trial (the first was in January). With 50 entries, the trial was a success, although the weather was iffy all weekend. The trial location is in the Sandhills Gameland, 63,000 acres managed by North Carolina Wildlife for a variety of recreational purposes.

Three braces of Amateur Shooting Dogs braved a chilly and rainy Saturday afternoon. Judges Calvin Curnutte and Tony Bly pinned Phillips Half Moon, owned by Matt Phillips, with the blue ribbon. Matt also took the second ribbon with Phillips Spitting Image. Pirate’s Mean Louise was awarded third place for owner Dennis Kivikko.

After some hot coffee and lunch, owners, handlers and staff were glad to get back to kennels and home as the weather deteriorated and fog set in for the late afternoon.

Everyone planned to get wet on Sunday. The temperature never got above 38° with wind and misty rain from time to time.

Tony Bly and Gerald Movelle had their work cut out. Open Puppy drew eleven entries. Bobby Thompson’s Ashpole Creek Angle Motion, handled by Robert Ecker, took the blue. Island Pond Finnback, owned by Joe Levesque and Ecker handling took the red. Cairds You’re So Vain was third for owner/handler Robert Little.

After a brief coffee break to thaw out, nine Open Derbies took the course for judges David Hoffine and Alex Reid. With three finds and a back, the stylish Knob Mountain Monarch won the Derby for owner Mike Spotts and handler Robert Ecker. Cantor’s Remi had twofinds and a back for owner Tom Wilkins and handler Robert Little. Jerry On Fire had finds and a back to earn the yellow ribbon for owner Nicholas Puhuk and handler Robert Ecker.

A hot lunch provided by Ann Robinson helped improve the mood as the day stayed windy and cold.

Open Shooting Dog (restricted) attracted eight contestants. Judged by David Huffine and Alex Reid, owner/handler Earl Drew, Jr. and Ms. Lady W took top honors with two finds and a nice back. Stokley B Ricky was working well for owner/handler Tony Bly who took second and Mooselock Fionn MacCool had several finds but also had “happy feet”. Owner John McNulty and handler Robert Little were glad to receive the third ribbon.

We called it a day as men and dogs were chilled to the bone and once again, the weather was deteriorating.

Monday morning was damp from overnight rain but much, much warmer. The temperatures topped out in the low 60s and certainly improved the mood of people, dogs and quail. The sun made its first appearance all weekend.

Open Shooting Dog was the final event and with16 dogs entered and 15 eager to take the course. Starting promptly at 8:00 a.m., David Hufine and Earl Drew, Jr. had a much better day to judge.

Islander was the total package for handler, Robert Ecker and owner Pedja Kazic who was delighted to accept the blue ribbon. With a number of finds and showing good range, Maximum Resistance, owned by Matt Phillips took second place. Third went to Sunrise Star for owner Dr. George Najor. Robert Ecker scored a trifecta as the handler for all three winning English setters.

Everyone got an early start for home after another nice visit and lunch.
