Field Trial Report

Spencer Farms Field Trial Club

By Keri Sims | May 16, 2017
One Day Freeze First in the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake

Milton, Fla. — The Spencer Farms spring trial commenced on Saturday morning with the temperature quickly rising to the mid-90s. Entries were down from last year due to several major championships running at the same time.

Several local dogs were entered in them.

The judges were treated to a seafood dinner on Friday night and a steak dinner on Saturday. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed Buck Heard’s stories.

The bird planters were kept busy placing birds on the course between every brace. The course was well groomed and the second hour course will be used this fall.

A special thanks to Nikki Spencer for providing breakfast pastries and lunch and to Keri Sims for handling secretarial duties.

Judges for the trial were Bobby Dubose, Pat McPherson, Robbie Thomas, Junior Sims and Jim Spencer.

The Amateur All-Age was won by Spencer Rambling Addition, pointer male handled by Jim Spencer. He had a good forward race with four stylish finds.

The Amateur Derby was won by Daddy Boy, pointer male handled by Bobby Dubose. He had a great forward race with a stylish broke dog find. Placed second was Heard Hill’s Rebel Jack, pointer male which had an exciting race with three finds. Third place was withheld.

The one-hour Amateur Shooting Dog was won by One Day Freeze, pointer female handled by Lane Hodges. She had a good forward race with five stylish finds. Second and third place were withheld. The judges wanted to give special recognition to two dogs that had great races, some good bird work but one too many contacts: Lynn Heard’s pointer Smut and Marla Favor’s German Shorthair Fiona.

The Open All-Age was won by Glory B, pointer female handled by Pat McPherson. She had a good forward race and three stylish finds. The Reveler, pointer male, had a good forward race with one good find. Third  was Chase’s Lil Big Man, pointer male owned by Paul and Robert Thomas.

Open Derby winner was Daddy Boy, pointer male handled by Bobby Dubose. He had one good find and another great race. One Day Tomoka Queen, setter female, had two good finds and kept very busy. Third was Big Hope, pointer male with a big forward race. He was handled by Bobby Dubose.

The Open Shooting Dog was won by LA Birdy, pointer female handled by Tom Hennes. She had a good forward race with three good finds. Second place was Whizzer McGee, pointer male handled by Tom Hennes and owned by Herbert Tomlinson. He had a good race and two finds. Extreme heat affected several dogs and scenting conditions were generally poor with little to no wind, after multiple finds and great races.
