WESTFALL’S BLACK CLOUD  Second in the Open All-Age Stake

Grovespring, Mo. — The Sportsmen’s Club of Southwest Missouri chose September 30-October 2 to kick off the fall season at their grounds at Grovespring, Mo. One week prior to the trial 1,500 birds had been released and the grounds were well manicured. The weather was great, birds plentiful with large coveys pointed in every stake.

The trial commenced on a Friday with the Open All-Age. Gailen Cooper of Oak Grove, Mo., and Fred Smith of Grovespring, Mo., judged the 16 entries. For a one-hour stake run so early in the fall with warm temperatures the dogs were in good shape and the competition was keen. The results of this and other stakes are appended below.

John Evans ran the dog wagon and did an excellent job, as usual. His wife Betty supplied tasty treats that made our stops between braces very enjoyable. Bonnie Hidalgo made the trip back from Colorado and ran several of her Irish setters.

In the Open Derby, it looked like Ryan Westfall might sweep but Richard Lewis with his young dog Rose had a nice go and gained third.

Fred Smith and David Paine judged the Open Derby and the Open Shooting Dog. Their decisions in both stakes were well received with White Feather, owned by Dan Hensley and handled by Terry Smith, gaining first place honors in the Open Shooting Dog. Saturday evening Ron Schultz and Stan Wint hosted a banquet and as always there was lots of food and good natured camaraderie.

In the Amateur Shooting Dog, Ronnie Litle’s Ice Cold and Don Arnold’s, Celeen were the top two contenders. Don also garnered third place with Charles. It was a great start to the fall field trial season.

This group would like to thank all of those who participated and after a busy fall schedule will look forward to seeing everyone back in the spring to wrap up the season.
