Field Trial Report

Spruce Brook Bird Dog Club

East Windsor, Conn. — The Spruce Brook Bird Dog Club and the U. S. Complete Northeast Region teamed up again to offer a mix of stakes for bird dog enthusiasts in late fall.

The first weekend in November brings us short days in the Northeast, especially that Sunday when we lose an hour due to daylight savings time. This time of year also brings picturesque scenery with beautiful fall foliage as the backdrop as our dogs work across the beautiful well groomed cover that makes up the courses at the Flaherty Field Trial Area in East Windsor, Conn.

We offered a full slate of U. S. Complete sanctioned amateur walking stakes on Saturday including a Gun Dog Stake, as well as a full slate of open horseback stakes on Sunday.

Weather for the weekend was partly sunny and in the 40s and 50s. Jayne Fogarty did an outstanding job as usual managing the clubhouse, keeping it meticulous, keeping it warm with the woodstove, and preparing three hot meals a day (with snacks in between). Jayne outdid herself with this year’s “early Thanksgiving dinner”, leaving participants or anyone else who stopped by raving about it for the rest of the weekend and saying they’d come to this trial just for the hospitality! I’m pretty sure they enjoyed running their dogs, too.

And run dogs we did.

We finished running dogs right at dark on Saturday with birds all over for the Gun Dog Stake! Doug Dix took first place with his Oswego’s Shore Oaks Annie, while Eric Rizza took home second with his Stokely’s Naughty Daughty. We hope to see Doug and Eric coming back for more and showing up at our trials this spring. After having a hearty turkey stew and leftovers from the night before, we finished running the horseback stakes just before dark on Sunday and were on the road.

I really would like to thank everybody who supported this trial, particularly John and Aidan Malone, John Olfson, Tim Cavanaugh, Jim Hathaway, Jamie Nee and Cory Roy, in no particular order, for judging the various stakes. We would also like to thank Purina for their continued support of our U. S. Complete trials. Hope to see everyone this spring.
