East Windsor, Conn. — The Spruce Brook Bird Dog Club held its annual spring trial May 25- 28, Memorial Day weekend. Weather this time of year often plays a role in the trial and this year was no different. We had two days of above normal tempera- tures and two days of below average temperatures. In order to pull off a multi- day, multi-stake trial it requires the cooperation of all the participants. We had a huge entry that required us to run twenty braces the first two days.

Spruce Brook trials are large social events with nightly dinners and lunches all provided by the club at no expense. Some of this year’s dinners were: linguine with clam sauce, lobster new- burg, lasagna and corned beef dinner.

Thanks to Susan Malone for all her help and Connie and Christy Riley for all the appetizers one night.

The club also wishes to thank Greg Blair and Purina for their continued sup- port of field trials. Without their support it would be difficult to continue.

We would also like to thank everyone who helped judge: Dave O’Brien, John Malone, John Olfson, Joe Lordi, Connie Riley, Brian Sanchez, Madison McDon- ald, John Stolgitis, and Brad Bonnetti and Mike Blondin who judged the one- hour Amateur Shooting Dog Classic.

We thank all of the planters: Erin Stol- gitis, Christy Riley, John Olfson, John Malone and Gene Casale. Anyone left out was inadvertent and I apologize.

The Open stakes winners are found below. Of note was Joe Lordi winning the Open All-Age with his pointer male Great River MacKenzie. It was Joe’s first open placement and he did it against some stiff competition. Congrats Joe!

The premier stake of the weekend was the one-hour Amateur Shooting Dog Classic. It drew 29 dogs, many of which are multiple title winners. Judges Mike Blondin from Vermont and Brad Bon- netti from New Jersey, have been in dogs most of their lives and brought their knowledge and enthusiasm with them. Every dog received their full attention and their placements were well received.

Awarded first was Backcountry Bonnie, owner-handler Kevin Joyce. Bonnie ran consistently well with a ma- ture race punctuated by six well spaced, well mannered finds. Second was Brian Sanchez with Great River Survivor. The almost solid white pointer ran as a bye dog and also had six finds. He ran a strong race as well, the only difference being strength on a couple of casts in key areas. Third place Waybetter Rocky (Carl Bishop), no stranger to the winners’ circle, ran a strong race with five perfect finds. If not for an absence near the end of his hour the placements would have certainly been different.

Thank you to all the participants both pro and amateur for their continued support of the Spruce Brook trials.
