Stephen G. Smith

Carterville, Ill. — We lost a good friend August 23  when Stephen Glenn Smith of Marion, Ill., died at age 73 in the Community Living Center, a part of the Veteran’s Hospital in  Marion.

At his wake Wednesday evening, August 28, I read the framed article with a  picture of Stephen’s Super Sport’s demise that appeared in The American Field. Super Sport had a storied career for Steve, winning a total of 57 placements, among them the NBHA North Central Region Shooting Dog Championship in 1985, the Region 4 Amateur Walking Shooting Dog Championship (1986), runner-up in the Region 6 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship (1987), the title in the National Amateur Walking Shooting Dog Championship and the NBHA Midwest Shooting Dog Championship (1988), and runner-up in the Egyptian Open Shooting Dog Championship (1989).

Steve’s life was dominated by his love of the outdoors and his dogs. He achieved success in not only retrievers but both walking and horseback trials.

He was such a good man who shared his smile and friendship with the sick on a regular basis. It appeared the whole town attended his wake. The parking lot was full at 4:00 p. m.

He field trialed back in the 1980s and 1990s. Many of the old-timers will remember this good man.

Steve was the loving husband of Jo Rana, father of Amber (Jeff) Fike and Melise (Ryan) Oakley and grand-father of eight.

Funeral services were accompanied by military honors.
