Trainers Report . . .

Aug 10, 2017
Colvin Davis

Colvin and Mazie Davis arrived at their summer home in Broomhill, Manitoba on July 21.

“We had a good trip up,” Mazie reported, “with a stopover at Crouse Kennels in Dixon, Ky. This annual stay is a treat. The horses have their own pasture, each dog has a kennel affording the animals a good rest.

“For us it is like being home with Mike, daughter Mary Sue, and her husband Matt. We also had a nice visit with Mike’s brother Jim. The Crouses’ hospitality is unbelievable! They open their facilities and home to all those traveling to their summer camps.

“Our wonderful neighbors and friends in Broomhill had our summer home, kennels, and yards ready for us when we arrived. They were all here to help us unload and get settled in. Our garden was planted, flowers blooming, and a welcomed meal awaited us in the house.

“This year marks the first summer that we brought just our dogs. With a string of young dogs, Colvin knew it would require all his attention to get them ready for our hunting preserve, Davis Quail Hunts. These youngsters are keeping us plenty busy!

“Colvin has commented often that with this string a few years ago he would be raring to compete in the upcoming trials as he was with their grandsire, Ch. White Powder Pete!

“The country around Broomhill looks good. The farmers could use more moisture for the pastures but the crops and alfalfa fields look good for the most part. The combines have been out this week harvesting winter wheat and rye. Some of the alfalfa fields are getting a second cutting.

“The chickens we are seeing are mostly in the alfalfa fields. The dogs are finding some sizable young coveys. We have seen a few Hungarians but are in hopes as the crops come off those numbers will improve.

“An upcoming visit from friend and Strideaway cohort, Chris Mathan, will no doubt be enjoyable, as always.

“We are looking forward to the trials in Broomhill which begin on or about September 6. Greg Sheppard of Leesburg, Ga., and John Fuller, traveling from Thomasville, Ga., have graciously accepted the invitations to judge the Manitoba Championship and the Broomhill Open All-Age Classic.

“Colvin and I wish all a safe and successful summer. We also hope that Mortlach and Stoughton have good entries and great trials.”
