Inola, Okla. — The Tulsa Bird Dog Association held our third annual fall field trial at the McFarlin-Ingersoll Ranch in Inola, Okla. We had a great draw with 56 dogs entered for the two-day trial. We had so many amateurs on Saturday that we struggled to get all the stakes run. Thankfully we were able to run a second course for puppies and get the stakes in before we ran out of daylight.

Weather for both trial days was mild for mid-October, but still warm in the afternoons.

The grounds at the ranch are in outstanding shape and several wild or holdover coveys were found between our trial and Tom Woods’ trial two weeks previous.

Although we drew handlers from Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, we were particularly proud that 21 of those entries came from right here in Oklahoma. One of the goals of the club was to bring walking trials back to life here in Oklahoma and we are making great progress. We are always thrilled to have participants from far and wide, but a good base of local trialers helps to strengthen the game in the state.

As always, we want to thank Win and Kay Ingersoll for the use of the ranch. These grounds have always been available when we needed them and, of course, are outstanding with fantastic facilities.

We’d also like to thank all our judges, Becky Dickey, Drake Ochsner, Steve Morgan, Nick Carson and Dan Bridgewater. All paid close attention to their charges and rode tall in the saddle all day, handling any inquiries with grace and sincerity at the end of the day.

John Gaines and his wife Missy served a great lunch on Saturday; dinner on Saturday was handled by Shane Bevel. We are grateful for those who volunteer their time and freezer stores to feed the masses.

Also, we’d like to go out of our way to thank TBDA member Dan Bridgewater who put in a full day grooming the course on a tractor before we ran. In the fall, portions of the course can be overly thick and difficult to traverse on foot; having the paths mowed makes it so much more enjoyable and easier to watch your dog and not your footing.

We hope that all the competitors enjoyed their time here in Oklahoma and look forward to hosting more trials in the future.

Congratulations to all the winners.
