Field Trial Report

West Alabama Club

Barton's Brave Heart First in the Open and Amateur Shooting Dog Stakes

Walnut Grove, Ala. — The West Alabama Club of the NBHA held its annual trial on March 18 on the grounds of NBHA Hall-of-Famer Ken Tolbert in Walnut Grove, Ala.

Our trial was dedicated to the memory of our longtime field trial friend Glenn Vines who passed away May 26 shortly after the field trial season ended in 2016 at age 66 due to complications from a major surgery. All who knew Glenn had great respect for his know-ledge of bird dogs and his contributions to the sport of field trialing.

Glenn had owned, trained, campaigned and judged trial dogs for many years. We miss him greatly. All trophies for this trial were donated by Glenn’s family. These were accumulated over the years through placements Glenn won.

Glenn loved to have a good time. In his last report to The American Field Glenn jokingly stated that we would be without one of our good friends Dane Harris. He stated that Dane hadn’t died but it was worse than that. Dane had moved to North Carolina, which was pretty funny especially if you knew Glenn. The very sad part of this story was that Glenn had passed away before his report appeared in The Field.

We had a very nice entry, a total of 29. We were very proud of that and wish to thank all owners and handlers who entered their dogs. They are the ones who keep our sport moving and we can’t give them enough credit. All folks in attendance pitched in to help in any way we needed and made the trial run smoothly.

We had very capable judges whose decisions seemed to be well received—  Ken Tolbert, Carl Dooley, Edwin Cooley and Dane Harris.

Dale Bradford capably handled the bird planting chores. Dale is one of those younger guys who we truly need more of if our sport is to continue after we are gone. Maybe we can keep him with us.

We want to recognize another NBHA Hall-of-Famer, Mr. Charles Ashton. Although he’s not able to attend trials as he once did, he still loves the NBHA enough to support it financially. He never wants any recognition for what he does but he is so deserving. Thank you, Mr. Ashton.

We want to recognize all our NBHA National sponsors. They are Purina Pro Plan, Garmin, Christie Enterprises, Gun  Dog Central, Gun Dog Supply, and The American Field. All NBHA clubs should support these sponsors and encourage their friends and neighbors to do the same.
