West End Setter and Pointer Club

West End, N. C. — Thursday, February 6, was forecast to be a rainout day. A dry slot worked its way in and fortunately we got all nine braces of the Mills Hodge Amateur Classic in before the rains took over.

The classic has been the club’s featured stake for several years. It was started to honor our club stalwart Mills Hodge who graciously allows the club to use his facilities to run trials. We are forever indebted to him.

Mills was on hand to watch almost every brace over the four days of running. After a long day with few breaks, the judges named Maximum Resistance the winner. Max is a young leggy setter male owned by Matt Phillips of Cobleskill, N. Y. Matt has spent many hours working and developing Max into a top tier contender. The dog is magnificent on point and glides through the woods with a gait that eats up the turf. He scored on several quail in his run. Second was Islander, setter male owned and handled by Pedrag Kazic of Greenlawn, N. Y. Islander is also a big, leggy setter male. He too is a picture on point and surely can carry the mail. Islander had several quality finds including a dug-up woodcock.

Third was Bob’s Elhew Holly pointer female capably handled by Bobby Phillips of Jonesborough, Tenn. Holly worked well around the course tallying four quail finds. She too looked great on point and rolling through the woods.
