Valley Springs, Cal. — Stinson’s Moonlight Ranch in Valley Springs, Cal., offered a beautiful venue for our February, 2021 trial.

After the drawing on Thursday evening, rain moved in during the overnight hours. By Friday morning it was gone. Temperatures proved favorable for running dogs, ranging from the 50s to mid-60s for the weekend. The ponds were full of water, with the creeks and springs running providing plenty of water on the courses.

West Valley is blessed by the generosity of the Stinson family, allowing us to use this beautiful ranch to host our trials for close to twenty years now.

Friday morning, the 70th running of the Pete Cunningham Puppy commenced. This prestigious puppy stake was first run in 1948, only missing three years since its inception. The trophy is inscribed with many great dogs and notable handlers, including Jack Harper who won it in 1950 with Buckshot Lad for owner W. B. Palmer. This year, Nard Bailey took both placements with Diamond Jane, pointer female, and Diamond Dan, pointer male, in that order.

Friday, following the Puppy Stake, we opened the courses for our attendees to work their dogs and get some training in. This has become a usual practice as a way to thank our supporters.

Friday night’s dinner was a tasty spiral cut ham with all the fixings and dessert.

The headquarters garage hosts a full bath, four bunks, and woodstove for meals and socializing. There is also a furnished bunkhouse with a bathroom, shower, double sink vanity, and a wood stove to provide accommodations for our guests. The club serves three meals a day for the convenience and comfort of our attendees.

Special thanks to Jim and Patt Rose for their culinary expertise preparing meals, Karen Boyd for donating a delicious macaroni salad, Sherry Gresham for a salad, scalloped potatoes, appetizers, and sweet treats, and Jeff Gilbertson for getting the tri-tip for dinner on Saturday night.

Thank you to Brad LaVerne for bird planting, keeping the water troughs filled, and helping with many odd jobs.

Special thanks to our judges for their expertise and time in the saddle. Robbie Thompson and Terry Erickson judged the Puppy. Robbie Thompson and Nard Bailey judged the Open All Age.

The Dr. Hal Meyer Amateur Shooting Dog (formerly the George Chance), was judged by Jeff Gilbertson and Jim Rose. The Paul Rose Shooting Dog Derby was judged by Jim Rose and Gerry Gresham. Thank you so much to all of you.

Saturday morning, the George Haney Open All-Age commenced. The stake drew thirteen dogs. This year, Sonoma Strong, pointer male, owned and handled by Marc Cuneo, took first place. Second was Skydancer Gold Rush, setter male for owner-handlerTom Griffin, and third went to Knine’s Master of Illusion, Brittany male, for owner-handler Gerry Gresham.

After lunch the Dr. Hal Meyer Amateur Shooting Dog began with eleven dogs being drawn and ten starters, finishing up on Sunday morning. Touch’s California Dream, pointer male took top honors for owner-handler Tom Griffin. Second went to Dezasterous Night Stalker,  German Shorthair for  owner-handler Robbie Thompson. Magic, Knine’s Master of Illusion, Brittany male took third for owner-handler Gerry Gresham.

The Amateur Shooting Dog finished Sunday morning.

The Paul Rose Open Derby followed, rounding out the three-day event. The Derby drew eight youngsters with seven starters. This year’s winner was Horizon’s Bea, setter female for owner-handler Terry Erickson. Second place went to No Limit, pointer male for  Jeff Gilbertson, with Diamond Jane, points female garnering third for Nard Bailey.

After last year's near fatal horse wreck, it was wonderful to see Jeff Gilbertson back in the saddle, judging, scouting, and handling his dogs. His doctors had told him he wouldn’t ride again. With prayers, positive thinking, and determination, he proved them wrong. Thankfully, no injuries happened this year.

West Valley BDC and the Stinsons wish to express our deepest gratitude to all our staunch supporters for continuing to make our trial a success. Happy Trialing!
