Field Trial Report

Wichita Bird Dog Club

By Brad Taylor | Jun 18, 2020
Cruise Rocket Second in the Open Derby; Third in the Open Derby

Moline, Kan. — The Wichita Bird Dog Club held its trial March 6-7 in Moline, Kan.

We had a good entry consisting of 57 dogs. We had entrants come from five states to participate in the spring trial.

Special thanks to our judges: Paul Roederer, Don Kimble, Barry Ward, Jacob Starnes, Frank Schoenborn, Rhonda Shepherd and Brad Taylor.

WBDC has been running trials on these grounds for 32 years with special thanks to the Delong Family, our gracious landowner. These courses run continuous through the foothills of Kansas. The course consists of a mix of wild birds and pen raised birds.

During the trial the weather cooperated for Kansas, with cool mornings and warm afternoons. Scenting conditions were good which resulted in good bird work.

As always, a thank you for the help during the trial for the club members and other attendees. The trialers ate very well courtesy of Frank Schoenborn, Chuck Maxson and Rae Ott.

Frank Schoenborn and Paul Ott provided and drove the dog wagons. Which helped in planting birds, observers, and allows us to run continuous courses. Thank you to everyone else who pitched in during the course of the trial.

Thank you to Nutri Source for providing the winners with a quality dog food. If you have not tried their products please give them a shot.

The third brace of the Shooting Dog Stake (horseback) was exciting. Both dogs had great bird work and worked out in front. Dogs and handlers pushed the pace and were trading finds through the end of the brace. Four finds were carded during this brace with each dog showing their backing capabilities.

Bye Bye G G, pointer female handled by Greg Gibson, owned by Bob Lais, had two finds and a back in a snappy, medium race,  showing quickness.

Second place Flint Ridge Jake, pointer male handled by Justin Crook, owned by Paul Ott, carded two finds and two backs and ran a good race. Third place came at the end of the day in brace No. 10 after the temperature was warming up. Strangecreek Shine Down, pointer female handled by Klaus Schmidt, ran an upfront race with a solid find at 15.

The Open Derby (horseback) started later the first day and ran late into the following day. Derby class had a strong showing with fourteen dogs entered.

Earning first was Lone Big Time, owned by Missy Gaines and handled by Justin Crook. Cruise Rocket, owned by Paul Roederer and John Settle and handled by Paul Roederer, placed second. Third was Roulette Rocket, owned by Paul Roederer and John Settle and handled by Paul Roederer.

The third place dog came from the fifth brace, Brannigan’s Last Straw, handled by Chuck Maxson. “Ray” ran a good race with a find at 13 and a back at 28.
