Rogersville, Tenn. — The Wooden Nickel Bird Dog Club held its first ever USCSDA field trial on March 11 in Rogersville, Tenn. Thanks to the generosity of Terry Cantrell, we were allowed to use his grounds and outbuildings.

The club would also like to thank Larry Robertson of Johnson City, Tenn., and Phil Morgan of Newport, Tenn., for handling the judging assignments at the last minute when both advertised judges had to cancel due to health reasons. They gave each dog their full attention and each decision was well received.

We would also like to thank Chad Gillespie and Terry Martin for being our bird planters. Thank you to Dean Powell and his grandson Trevor Billingsley for transporting handlers and dogs back and forth from start and finish lines.

A special thank you to Bobby Phillips of Jonesborough, Tenn., for mentoring us, answering all our questions, help in laying out our courses, and for acquiring the judges. Thank you very much, Bobby!

Thank you to all the handlers who attended from three states: Adam Thomas from Kentucky; Bob Fortune, Greg Isenberg and Bobby Phillips, Tennessee; Dennis White, Bobby Peeler, Ray Anthony, Jeff Ware, Scott Luther and Dean Powell, North Carolina.

Arnold Hall from Tennessee rode a couple of braces in the gallery as well.

The grounds were very muddy due to heavy rainstorms two days before, so we were unable to use a gallery wagon.

The Amateur Puppy broke away at 8:00 with eight puppies entered. What a show they put on! When the mudslinging was over and after a lengthy discussion between the judges, who commented on the quality of all those entered, they placed Bob’s Miller Gail, pointer female owned by Bobby Phillips, first. Ray Anthony’s pointer male Pine Hollow Legends earned second. Bobby Peeler’s setter male Tennessee Trip took third.

The Amateur Derby had three quality entries. Dennis White’s pointer male Iceman Jim was placed first with two finds and a back.

The Amateur Shooting Dog drew 12 entries. At the end of the day, after trekking through all the mud, the judges placed Bobby Phillips’ pointer female Bob’s Elhew Holly, first; Greg Isenberg’s pointer male Elhew Moneymaker, second; and Bob’s Elhew Julie, pointer female also owned by Bobby Phillips, third. All dogs had exceptional bird work and more than acceptable ground races.

The Wooden Nickel Club again would like to thank all who were in attendance and look forward to next year.
